Studio Neat , Business Strategy
Studio Neat was founded in 2010 by Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost. We are two designers who enjoy making simple products that solve problems.
We like to think of ourselves, in Kottke parlance, as a small batch business. To this day, the two of us are the only employees, and we remain focused on making great and useful products.
The Glif, our first product, represented a new way of approaching consumer products, and it wouldn't have been possible without a few thousand people who believed in us. Launched on Kickstarter in 2010, the Glif was the first consumer tech project to reach such a high level of funding and acclaim on the site. Exceeding our initial goal by over 10x, Studio Neat, as a company, was born. In the years since we have updated the Glif a few times, including an adjustable version that will work with any smartphone.
A few months after the Glif began shipping, we launched our second Kickstarter project for the Cosmonaut, a wide-grip stylus for touch screens. It was met with similar enthusiasm, and it was at this point the two of us decided to quit our jobs and take Studio Neat full time. Since then we have released several iPhone apps, wrote a book, and continue to make hardware products.
